Living in Southern California, we are fortunate in that we have many options for outdoor living. Creating an outdoor living room, dining area or even a kitchen is not out of the question. Giving adequate thought and planning, not to mention time and money, you can easily add living space. However, the one element that ties it all together is a solid patio cover and one that will protect your guests and furnishings from the elements.
There are three primary patio cover materials to consider: wood, vinyl and aluminum.
Wood: With its natural beauty, wood is the go-to choice for patio covers. Wood provides many colors and textures for your patio design and can be painted to coordinate with the design scheme of the home. However, one major downside is the upkeep. Especially, here in Southern California, the sun can do quick damage to the structure.
Aluminum: This material is a solid choice for patio covers as it requires very low maintenance, is eco-friendly and can withstand those Santa Ana winds. Unlike wood, it won’t burn if we experience wildfires as we have recently as aluminum is quite fire resistant.
Vinyl: This material is constructed from PVC plastic. With its durability, vinyl will not warp or rot and can easily be cleaned with a garden hose. However, vinyl is limited in colors and usually requires other materials to provide stability and strength, thereby adding to the cost.
